   This course introduces the medical assistant student to the clinical laboratory. Topics covered in this course are laboratory safety, regulations, microscopes, quality assurance, blood collection, basic math, and spirometry. The student will learn to perform evacuated tube, syringe, and butterfly needle venipuncture, as well as capillary puncture. Performance will be on adults only; infant and child methods will be simulated. Students will be expected to participate as both a phlebotomist and as a patient.

   2. Blood collection (evacuated tube, syringe, butterfly, capillary puncture)

4. Learning Outcomes
   1. The student will be able to identify specimen collection equipment and use the equipment to perform collection procedures according to standard laboratory practice and OSHA regulations.
   2. Demonstrate proper venipuncture procedure.
   3. Demonstrate proper capillary puncture procedure.
   4. Use a microscope.
   5. Perform spirometry.
   6. Solve basic math problems.
   7. Identify blood collection equipment.
   8. Adhere to laboratory safety protocols.
   9. Recall laboratory personnel.
