    Students taking this course will learn what it takes to own, operate, and grow a small business successfully. The student will learn the personal traits and characteristics necessary to succeed in the fast-paced small business environment. This course will also examine the various ways small business can start. Some of these ways include starting a business from scratch, buying an existing business, or buying a franchise. Various case studies will be examined as to why some businesses fail, while other succeed. In addition, the student will identify their individual strengths and weaknesses and will learn which of these areas help or hinder the success of small business ownership. Although there is no way to 100% "failure-proof" a business, the student will learn the three main secrets to launching a small business successfully.

    1. The student will define what success means to them personally.
    2. The student will learn the six ways of starting a small business.
    3. The student will learn the tax advantages of starting his or her own small business
    4. The student will create a feasibility study for a new business idea.
    5. The student will learn how creating a business plan before starting the business impacts the success rate of new businesses.
    6. The student will develop a working knowledge of all aspects of intellectual property.
    7. The student will learn the five major reasons small business fail in the first 12 months of operation.
    8. The student will learn how personal passion affects the success of a new small business.
    9. The student will learn how having a sense of purpose affects the success of a new small business.
    10. The student will interview a small business owner to determine what caused the owners business to succeed, what obstacles were faced, and how the business owner overcame the obstacles. The student will present to the class what was learned by this interview.
